Emerse Fae Attributes Ivory Coast’s World Cup Exit to Lack of Maturity Following Defeat to Norway
In the wake of the Ivory Coast’s departure from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, head coach Emerse Fae has pointed the finger at his team’s lack of experience after suffering a narrow 2-1 loss to Norway in the Round of 32 match held at Dallas Stadium. This particular match marked a significant moment for Norway, as it secured their spot in the last 16 for the first time since 1998, largely thanks to star player Erling Haaland.
The game began with a notable advantage for Norway, when Antonio Nusa found the back of the net, delivering a powerful shot that put the Scandinavian side ahead just six minutes before the halftime break. However, the Ivorian team rallied back, leveling the score in the 74th minute with a remarkable goal from Amad Diallo, whose composed finish displayed his resolve under pressure.
Unfortunately for Ivory Coast, Haaland swiftly took advantage of a momentary lapse in their defense to restore Norway’s lead, effectively sealing the match. The situation intensified as Diallo unleashed a stunning free-kick late in the game, which was met by an equally impressive save from Norway’s goalkeeper, Nyland, allowing his team to maintain their lead.
Reflecting on the loss, Fae expressed his disappointment, stating, “That’s football. When you get chances, you have to score. We did the hard part by equalising. Unfortunately, we conceded that goal at the end. It’s a shame.” He acknowledged the efforts of his players, emphasizing that this World Cup experience provided them with valuable lessons to build upon for future competitions.
Defender Malick Thiaw echoed Fae’s sentiments, highlighting the difficulty of losing in the final moments and how crucial experience will be moving forward. He noted, “It was the very first World Cup for many players, and maybe we were lacking in maturity. We’ve learned a lot, thanks to this competition.” Thiaw suggested that perhaps a more pragmatic approach could have seen them play for extra time, reflecting on their strategy against top-tier opponents.
On the other hand, Norway’s manager, Stale Solbakken, sang praises for the Ivory Coast team, acknowledging that they posed significant challenges during the match. He remarked, “We played against a fantastic team who have some absolute monsters, physically, who got the better of us in the duels at times.” Solbakken admitted that the match was closely contested, with the outcome hanging in the balance throughout. He recognized that while Norway had slightly more opportunities, the fine margins ultimately favored their side.
Amad Diallo, who scored the Ivorian team’s goal, took the chance to celebrate their progress, asserting their pride as the youngest team in the tournament. “It’s a big thing to score that goal because it’s a dream come true. In the end, even if you lose, it’s a win also,” he reflected. Although the defeat marked the end of their journey in this World Cup, the team’s performance remains a source of pride as they look ahead.
Having concluded their campaign, Ivory Coast’s exit leaves Norway to prepare for a challenging Round of 16 matchup against Brazil, scheduled for July 5th at New York New Jersey Stadium.
