Victoria Mboko Withdraws from Canadian Open Due to Knee Injury
The reigning champion of the women’s singles, Victoria Mboko, has officially announced her withdrawal from the upcoming Canadian Open, citing a knee injury she sustained during her last match. The world-ranked number 10 confirmed this decision earlier today.
The 19-year-old from Canada has not participated in any competitive matches since her unfortunate slip while facing Karolina Pliskova at the Queen’s Club Championships back in June. Following medical scans of her left knee, it was revealed that she had injured the medial collateral ligament, prompting her to exit the quarter-finals of the doubles event where she was set to partner with the renowned Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion.
This injury has forced Mboko to forfeit her involvement for the rest of the grass-court season, including missing out on the prestigious Wimbledon tournament. Expressing her disappointment, Mboko stated that the preparation event prior to the US Open in Toronto held significant importance for her. “Not being able to play at home this summer in front of the people I love and with the support of the Toronto crowd is deeply disappointing, as it has been something I’ve been looking so much forward to,” she elaborated on her emotional setback.
The Canadian Open is scheduled to take place from August 2nd to 13th in Toronto.
