Atlanta Falcons Secure Matthew Bergeron with $96 Million Extension

The Atlanta Falcons have finalized a significant deal with offensive guard Matthew Bergeron, signing him to a four-year contract extension valued at $96 million, out of which $60 million is fully guaranteed. This strategic move highlights the team’s commitment to fortifying their offensive line.

At just 26 years old, Bergeron has shown remarkable consistency throughout his career, finishing the last NFL season with an impressive overall rating of 70.8, placing him 22nd among 81 qualified guards. The Falcons selected him as the 38th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and since then, he has made a substantial impact on the team’s performance on the field. Notably, he missed just two games during his tenure with the Falcons, with the absence due to an ankle injury.

General Manager Ian Cunningham expressed his confidence in Bergeron, stating, “Matthew is the type of player you build around. He’s establishing himself as one of the top young guards in the NFL, and his toughness, consistency, and leadership have made him a cornerstone of our offensive line and the culture we’re building in Atlanta.”

Bergeron’s defensive prowess is undeniable. Last season, he allowed just one sack across 519 pass-blocking snaps, contributing only 28 pressures and seven quarterback hits, which speaks volumes to his ability to protect the team’s quarterback and maintain the integrity of the offensive strategy.

Cunningham further noted, “Extending players like Matthew reflects our commitment to investing in the trenches and building a strong foundation for the future. We’re very excited he will be a Falcon for years to come.” He also acknowledged the professionalism of Chase Callahan, who played a pivotal role in navigating the negotiation process.

The Falcons are set to open their regular season on September 13th, taking on the Pittsburgh Steelers, with high expectations as they aim to capitalize on their strengthened roster.
