Jack Draper Faces Tough Comeback Challenge
Jack Draper, a rising star in the world of tennis, encountered yet another hurdle in his journey back to top form on Thursday. The injury-plagued British player suffered a disappointing 6-3, 7-5 loss to Martin Landaluce in the first round of the Cincinnati Open, adding to his series of setbacks this season.
A Career-High Ranking Derailed by Injuries
Draper initially reached a remarkable career-high ranking of four in 2025, but his progress has been severely hampered due to a bone injury in his arm, which cut his season short the previous year. This year, he has also contended with troublesome knee issues. His return to competitive play began at the Canadian Open after he withdrew from Wimbledon in June. However, his first-round defeat against Terence Atmane left him emotionally shaken, and he broke down in tears.
Turning Point in Cincinnati
In his match in Cincinnati, Draper demonstrated promise by leading 5-2 in the second set before Landaluce mounted a comeback, clinching five consecutive games to secure victory. Reflecting on the match, Draper expressed frustration, stating, “The way I’m usually able to fight for every ball and conduct myself, it’s just missing.” His current ranking stands at 143, and the early exit from both the Montreal and Cincinnati tournaments may necessitate that he competes through qualifying rounds at the upcoming US Open—a tournament where he previously reached the semi-finals in 2024.
The Steep Climb Ahead
At 24, Draper is acutely aware of how far he has fallen in the rankings and the substantial adjustments he needs to make to his game. “The level of my fall almost from where I was last year and the amount of things that I’m having to change in my tennis … The mountain seems very, very big,” he remarked. The pressure builds as he prepares for the US Open, which is set to commence on August 30, 2026.
