ELINA SVITOLINA FORCED TO WITHDRAW FROM CINCINNATI OPEN DUE TO INJURY
In a disappointing turn of events, Elina Svitolina, currently ranked ninth in the world, has announced her withdrawal from the Cincinnati Open due to a right ankle injury. This decision came just before her anticipated third-round match against China’s Wang Xiyu, allowing Wang to advance to the last 16 through a walkover.
Expressing her disappointment, Svitolina stated, “Unfortunately, I tried my best to recover, but the injury I sustained in Toronto, compounded by the challenges of my second-round match, has left me unable to prepare as thoroughly as I had hoped for this round.” Despite her efforts to compete, the extent of her injury did not permit her to proceed.
Reflecting on her past experiences in Cincinnati, Svitolina expressed nostalgia, saying, “I have of course great memories of playing here and going deep in the tournament. Had a great match here two nights ago. Very sad to pull out this round.” This highlights the emotional toll that such setbacks can take on athletes, especially in grand tournaments where they wish to showcase their talents.
During her second-round match against Tereza Valentova, Svitolina took a medical timeout to address the issue with her right foot in the second set. However, she managed to secure victory with scores of 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-0, demonstrating her resilience despite physical challenges.
Looking ahead, Svitolina is set to next compete at the US Open, which is scheduled to begin later this month, where she will be hoping to make a strong comeback as she continues her recovery process.
