Venus Williams Awarded Wildcard for US Open
Venus Williams, a two-time champion of the US Open, has officially secured a wildcard entry into this year’s tournament, as confirmed by the event organizers on Tuesday. At 46 years old, Williams, a veteran of the sport and a seven-time Grand Slam titleholder, faced an early exit from last year’s event, where she was defeated in the first round by Czech player Karolina Muchova.
A Return to Competition
This year marks a significant moment for Williams as she rejoins singles competition at the US Open. Additionally, she and her sister, Serena Williams, made their return to doubles play for the first time since 2022 but unfortunately faced a loss in their opening match at the Cincinnati Open earlier this week.
Other Wildcard Recipients
Alongside Williams, Sloane Stephens, who won the US Open in 2017, also received a wildcard entry as she works to regain her footing after a foot injury hindered her 2025 season. The tournament organizers have indicated that one women’s singles wildcard remains to be announced.
Men’s Wildcard Entries
On the men’s side, French player Gael Monfils, a former world number six, was granted a wildcard into the main draw earlier this month. Monfils has announced that he plans to retire at the end of the current season. In addition, Monfils will compete alongside his spouse, Elina Svitolina, in the mixed doubles tournament, having both been awarded wildcards for this event.
Upcoming Matches and Expectations
The anticipation for the US Open is palpable as these renowned players gear up for their matches. The tournament promises to present thrilling clashes and moments, particularly with the return of seasoned athletes such as Venus Williams and Gael Monfils, both of whom are eager to make their mark in what could be pivotal events in their careers.
