Griekspoor Withdraws from Cincinnati Open Due to Injury
Tallon Griekspoor has officially announced his withdrawal from the Cincinnati Open, citing an injury sustained during a training session. The Dutch player, currently ranked 56th in the world, confirmed his decision on Friday, just before he was scheduled to compete against fellow compatriot Botic van de Zandschulp in the opening round of the prestigious Masters 1000 tournament.
Training Incident Leads to Withdrawal
Griekspoor disclosed that he felt discomfort in his abdominal muscles while training on Thursday. He reacted swiftly to the pain and halted his practice immediately, realizing the severity of the situation. “I sought treatment last night and again this morning, but it isn’t safe or feasible for me to take to the court,” he stated during an interview with Ziggo Sport. He conveyed uncertainty over whether the issue was a muscle strain or a complete tear.
Past Injury Context
Reflecting on his previous experiences, Griekspoor mentioned a similar injury he sustained last year during the French Open. “I don’t believe this is as serious as that incident; it feels relatively better this time around,” he remarked, expressing hope that he would have sufficient time to recover in preparation for the upcoming US Open, which is set to commence on Sunday, August 23rd.
Van de Zandschulp’s New Matchup
As a result of Griekspoor’s withdrawal, Botic van de Zandschulp will now face lucky loser Alexander Shevchenko in Friday’s first-round encounter. This unexpected turn of events alters the dynamics of the tournament for both players, yet it offers Van de Zandschulp an opportunity to advance without facing his Dutch counterpart.
Future Plans for Griekspoor
Griekspoor is now focusing on recovering fully from his injury. His immediate plan is to return home to begin his recuperation process before heading to New York City, where he aims to participate in the US Open. The Dutch athlete remains optimistic about his prospects of returning to the court in time for the tournament.
