Holger Rune Withdraws from the US Open Due to Injury
Holger Rune, the former world number four, has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming US Open as he continues to recover from an Achilles tendon injury that has kept him out of competitive play since October of last year. This news was confirmed by tournament organizers on Friday.
The 23-year-old Dane’s last appearance on the court was during the semi-finals in Stockholm in 2022, where he sustained his injury. Despite signs of potential return, including practice sessions shared on social media with fellow competitor Carlos Alcaraz, Rune has ultimately decided not to compete in this prestigious tournament.
Alcaraz, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, has also been dealing with injuries, specifically sidelined since April due to a wrist issue. However, he made a triumphant return announcement via social media, just in time for the US Open, set to begin on August 30 in New York.
In Rune’s absence, Argentine player Facundo Diaz Acosta will take his place in the main tournament draw, marking an important opportunity for the young athlete to showcase his skills on a major stage.
