Ajax Signs Julian Brandt in a Surprising Transfer
Ajax has made a noteworthy addition to their squad with the signing of Julian Brandt. The German winger and midfielder, aged 30, has secured a contract with the Amsterdam club after parting ways with Borussia Dortmund.
Brandt, who has represented Germany 48 times, is joining Ajax on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Dortmund in June. He has committed to a three-year deal, marking a significant move for the Eredivisie side.
The transfer has caught many by surprise, especially with media attention focused on the anticipated arrival of goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen from FC Barcelona. Ajax’s technical director, Jordi Cruyff, expressed his enthusiasm about Brandt’s decision to join the club, stating, “We have been in talks for several months, and I am thrilled Julian has chosen Ajax. He could have opted for other clubs, but we are bringing in a seasoned international player with exceptional experience and a fantastic mindset. I am confident he will bring real quality to our team.”
Before joining Ajax, Julian Brandt had a successful spell at Borussia Dortmund, where he made 307 appearances, netting 57 goals and assisting on 65 occasions after transferring from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019. Last season, Brandt played in 41 matches for Dortmund, scoring 11 goals and providing 4 assists.
This signing marks the fifth addition to Ajax’s squad this summer as they aim to revamp the team. Earlier signings include Daley Blind, Caio Henrique, Marcos Leonardo, and Tolu Arokodare, demonstrating Cruyff’s proactive approach to rebuilding the squad.
Ajax is coming off a disappointing league performance, finishing fifth and accruing only 63 points, which is tied for their lowest league position since 1963. The club managed to qualify for the UEFA Conference League through playoff matches, a crucial step as they look to improve in the upcoming season. Under the management of Michel, who was appointed in June, Ajax has successfully reached the third round of the UEFA Conference League qualifying phase after a commanding 8-2 aggregate victory against Vojvodina Novi Sad.
