Al Ahly Parts Ways with Coach Jess Thorup Following Unsuccessful Season

In a significant move for the Egyptian football club Al Ahly, the management has announced the termination of head coach Jess Thorup’s contract after a disappointing season. This decision, confirmed on Thursday, was made by mutual consent between Thorup and the club, marking the end of their collaboration.

According to the club’s statement, Thorup has signed a settlement agreement, having received all payments as stipulated in his contract. The 56-year-old Danish coach was brought on board in October, following the departure of his predecessor, Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

During his tenure, Thorup led Al Ahly to secure the prestigious Egyptian Super Cup title, triumphing 2-0 over arch-rivals Zamalek. However, despite this early success, the team’s performance declined as the season progressed. Ultimately, Al Ahly finished in third place in the league standings, resulting in the club missing out on qualification for the next season’s African Champions League. Instead, they will compete in the Confederation Cup.

In addition to the league setback, the club was also eliminated in the quarter-finals of Africa’s premier club competition, further compounding the issues that led to Thorup’s exit. The decision to part ways with the coach reflects the club’s commitment to improving performance and achieving success in future campaigns.
