BAFANA BEWARE: WORLD CUP GROUP A RIVALS CLAIM BIG WINS IN FINAL WARM-UP FIXTURES

In a significant final preparation for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, Mexico has sent a clear message to their Group A counterpart, Bafana Bafana, by achieving a resounding 5-1 victory over Serbia. This match, held shortly before their World Cup opener against South Africa on June 11, showcased Mexico’s offensive strength and readiness for the tournament.

The Czech Republic, another team that South Africa will face in the group stages, also demonstrated their competitive edge with a convincing 3-1 win against Guatemala. Meanwhile, South Korea has been showing promising form, which poses an added challenge for Hugo Broos and his squad as they head into the prestigious tournament.

Despite starting on the back foot with an early goal from Petar Stanic of Serbia, Mexico quickly regained control of the match after converting two own goals courtesy of Serbian players Stefan Bukinac and Adem Avdic. They further solidified their dominance with goals from Raul Jimenez, Johan Vasquez, and Luis Chavez, the latter making a notable return from injury to contribute to the scoreboard.

Coach Javier Aguirre, in his third stint with the national team, expressed confidence following the match, emphasizing the team’s preparation efforts: “It hasn’t been an easy road, but we’re ready for the World Cup. Let’s hope we start off on the right foot.” This victory marks Mexico’s eighth consecutive match without a loss, a promising streak leading into the World Cup.

The Czech Republic’s performance was bolstered by efforts from Patrik Schick, Tomas Chory, and Denis Visinsky, who managed to break away from Guatemala’s defense, securing the match only in the closing stages. Their win follows a prior 2-1 victory against Kosovo, leaving the Czechs unbeaten in their last six games, with four wins and two draws.

As the clock counts down to the World Cup, South Africa will open their campaign against Mexico next Thursday, with their schedule further including a match against the Czech Republic in Atlanta on June 18. They will round off their Group A fixtures against South Korea in Monterrey on June 24.

Bafana’s preparations include one last warm-up match against Jamaica, now set for Saturday at 11 PM South Africa time. However, this game will be played without spectators and will not be televised, wrapping up their final adjustments before the World Cup kicks off.
