Asian Cup Draw Rescheduled for May Following Middle East Conflict Delay
The highly anticipated draw for the 2027 Asian Cup, which is set to take place in Saudi Arabia, has been rescheduled for May 9 in Riyadh. This change, announced by the Asian Football Confederation, comes in response to recent disruptions to regional sporting events due to escalating conflicts in the Middle East.
Originally slated for April 11, the draw will now occur at the historic At-Turaif District in Diriyah. The AFC highlighted that the postponement was necessary to ensure the participation of all key stakeholders and member associations, emphasizing the importance of their involvement in this major continental event.
The decision to delay follows a series of sporting events across the Middle East that were either postponed or canceled due to heightened tensions, particularly following military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran last month.
Saudi Arabia is gearing up to host this prestigious continental championship for the first time, set to commence from January 7 to February 5, 2027, with 24 teams competing. Out of these, 23 teams have already secured their qualification. The upcoming draw will categorize these nations into six television groups of four.
The final team to qualify will be determined on June 4, when Lebanon faces Yemen in a pivotal playoff match. Defending champions Qatar have already claimed their spot in the finals, alongside notable teams such as Japan, a four-time champion, and other World Cup qualifiers including South Korea, Iran, Jordan, Australia, and Uzbekistan.
