Diamond League Announces Increased Prize Money for 2026
The Diamond League has made a significant announcement regarding the prize money structure for its upcoming 2026 season. On Wednesday, officials revealed that the top-level individual prize money will see an increase in selected events, thereby expanding the number of disciplines that will offer enhanced payouts. This change aims to maintain an overall prize pool of $9.24 million while providing more opportunities for athletes to earn higher rewards.
Expansion of Diamond+ Disciplines
In a notable shift, the number of ‘Diamond+’ disciplines—events that feature elevated prize money—will double from four to eight at all meetings. This will include a balanced distribution of two sprint or hurdles events, two long or middle-distance races, two field events, and two additional disciplines, ensuring equitable opportunities for both male and female athletes. As organizers noted, this structure enhances the chances for a broader range of athletes to increase their earnings while also promoting gender equality within the sport.
Potential Earnings for Athletes
Athletes competing in the Diamond League meetings will now have the chance to earn up to $20,000, while those qualifying for the Final can vie for an impressive $60,000—the highest individual rewards seen in the series’ 17-year history. It’s also important to mention that the basic level of individual prize money will remain unchanged, with competitors still able to earn up to $10,000 during series meetings and up to $30,000 in the Final.

The much-anticipated 2026 Diamond League season is set to kick off on May 16 in Shanghai/Keqiao, culminating in a two-day Final scheduled for September 4-5 in Brussels. This season promises not only enhanced financial incentives but also aims to celebrate the diverse talents present in athletics.
