Indianapolis Colts Secure Jonathan Taylor with Significant Contract Extension
In a pivotal move for their roster, the Indianapolis Colts have successfully signed starting running back Jonathan Taylor to a lucrative two-year contract extension, valued at $44 million. Notably, this agreement includes a staggering $39 million in guaranteed funds, reflecting the franchise’s commitment to securing one of the league’s top talents. The extension was officially announced earlier on Thursday morning.
Taylor’s contract has the potential to escalate to $47 million, contingent upon certain performance-based incentives. This financial commitment follows closely on the heels of a similar announcement by the Atlanta Falcons, who signed their star RB Bijan Robinson to a three-year deal worth $75 million earlier in the same week, underscoring a trend of hefty investments in running backs across the NFL.
The 27-year-old Taylor had an exceptional season last year, leading the NFL in combined touchdowns with an impressive total of 18 rushing touchdowns, complemented by two receiving touchdowns. In terms of scrimmage yards, he ranked third overall, amassing 1,963 yards, trailing only Robinson and San Francisco 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey, who recorded 2,298 and 2,126 yards respectively.
As the franchise’s centerpiece, Taylor distinguished himself by recording 84 rushing first downs last season—the highest in the league. This was a notable achievement for him, particularly as it marked his return to form after a standout 2021 season, during which he also led the NFL in rushing yards (1,811), rushing touchdowns (18), and first downs (107).
Coming off remarkable back-to-back seasons where he exceeded 1,100 rushing yards and scored at least 10 rushing touchdowns while maintaining an average of just below five yards per carry, Taylor’s performance has solidified his status as a premier running back in the league.
The Colts are set to kick off their upcoming season on September 13 against the Baltimore Ravens, an event that fans hope will showcase Taylor’s continued prowess and the team’s intentions to contend in the NFL.
