Arsenal Secures Advantage in Champions League Quarter-finals Against Chelsea
In a thrilling encounter at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal Women emerged victorious over Chelsea Women with a score of 3-1 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final matchup. The match showcased standout performances from key players, particularly Alessia Russo, who celebrated her contribution to the team’s success.
The game began with early chances for Chelsea, highlighting their offensive threats as they collided with the woodwork on two occasions. Within the first five minutes, a cross from Alyssa Thompson inadvertently deflected off Laia Codina, almost leading to an opening goal, but instead it struck the far post, keeping the score level. Just two minutes later, Lauren James also hit the post, representing a close call for the visiting side.
Arsenal took the lead in the 22nd minute, thanks to Stina Blackstenius, who scored her first Champions League goal of the season by heading home a free-kick delivered by Katie McCabe. The Gunners extended their advantage shortly thereafter, with Beth Mead providing a cross-field pass to Chloe Kelly. Kelly, with keen precision, unleashed a powerful shot from 20 yards that slipped past Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Hannah Hampton.
As the match neared halftime, Chelsea thought they had found the equalizer when Veerle Buurman scored, only for the goal to be ruled out due to a foul by Buurman against Codina—a decision confirmed by VAR, much to the dismay of Chelsea’s head coach, Sonia Bompastor.
In the second half, Chelsea managed to get back into contention when Lauren James executed a spectacular left-footed lob from 25 yards out, narrowing the gap to 3-1. However, Arsenal responded decisively and restored their two-goal lead in the 76th minute. Russo, assisted by Blackstenius, demonstrated her skill by flicking the ball before volleying it past Hampton in a stunning display of technique.
Despite Chelsea’s determination, John Bompastor’s side faced further frustration as a goal from Kadeisha Buchanan in stoppage time was disallowed, again for a foul on the Arsenal goalkeeper, Anneke Borbe.
The two teams will meet again on April 2 for the crucial second leg at Stamford Bridge, where Arsenal will aim to maintain their advantage, and Chelsea will look to overturn the deficit. The winner of this matchup is set to face either Wolfsburg or Lyon, as Wolfsburg leads their tie 1-0 after the first leg.
