Robbie Deans Appointed Performance Director at Harlequins

In an exciting development for the English rugby scene, Robbie Deans, the former coach of the Australian national team, has been announced as the new performance director for Harlequins starting next season. This news comes as a strategic move for the club, which has faced challenges this season, currently sitting second from the bottom in the Premiership after a a disappointing streak of six consecutive losses, most recently against fellow struggling team, Gloucester.

Collaboration with New Coaching Staff

Deans will be teaming up with Jason Gilmore, who has stepped into the role of head coach after taking interim charge earlier this season. His experience and strategic insight are expected to bolster the club’s performance. Additionally, Rob Hunter, a former coach from Exeter, will join as the forwards coach in July, completing a fresh coaching trio aimed at revitalizing Harlequins’ fortunes.

A Legacy of Coaching Excellence

Robbie Deans brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously been an assistant coach for the All Blacks before making history as the first non-Australian to lead the Wallabies in 2007. Speaking about his new role, the 66-year-old expressed his excitement, stating, “Harlequins is a proud club with a strong history, and it is a privilege to be asked to contribute towards the future. There are many good people within their ranks, and I look forward to working with them.”

Support from Current Head Coach

Jason Gilmore welcomed Deans’ appointment as a significant boost for the team, acknowledging, “Having Robbie come on board is such a positive addition. The guidance and support he will provide me personally, as well as our coaching and playing group, will be invaluable.” This optimistic outlook reflects the club’s commitment to turning their season around.

Outlook for Harlequins

As Harlequins look to regain their competitive edge in the Premiership, the combined expertise of Deans, Gilmore, and Hunter represents a renewed hope for fans and players alike. All eyes will be on them as they implement changes and work towards enhancing their performance on the pitch in the upcoming season.
