Hugo Broos Confirms The One Player Who Will Definitely Go to the 2026 World Cup If Fit

Bafana Bafana’s head coach, Hugo Broos, has made a firm statement regarding the inclusion of Themba Zwane in the South African national team for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, provided the player maintains his fitness. Following an impressive one-hour performance in a friendly match that ended in a 1-1 draw against Panama, Zwane appears to be a key asset for the team.

This was Zwane’s first international appearance since October 2024, having faced several injury challenges during his time with Mamelodi Sundowns. Despite these setbacks, Broos has expressed his confidence in the 36-year-old playmaker, indicating that he has effectively demonstrated his capability on the field, which makes his presence in the squad even more valuable.

“He is such a good player,” Broos stated, highlighting the player’s positive influence on the team’s performance. “He made us play better football.” However, Broos also acknowledged that Zwane is not yet fit enough to participate for a full 90 minutes, emphasizing the need for cautious management of the player’s workload to prevent further injuries.

The coach elaborated on this precautionary approach by noting that Zwane was substituted after 55 minutes to ensure he would not be overloaded during this crucial recovery period. Broos also indicated that Zwane’s participation in the match scheduled for the coming Tuesday in Cape Town would depend on his recuperation process.

“If he recuperates, he will play again, because he needs that,” Broos added, underscoring the importance of allowing the player to regain game readiness. The coach also expressed hope that Zwane would see more playing time at his club, Sundowns, in the lead-up to the World Cup, as consistent match play would aid his overall rhythm and performance.

Reflecting on Zwane’s match performance, Broos pointed out that there were moments where he appeared to be slightly sluggish, attributing this to his limited playing time recently. “We saw a few moments when he was a little bit too slow. And that reason of that is because he doesn’t play enough,” he remarked.

In closing, Broos reasserted his belief that as long as Themba Zwane remains fit and free from injuries, he will be part of the squad for the World Cup, despite not being at full match fitness. South Africa is set to face Panama once again in Cape Town next Tuesday, presenting another opportunity for Zwane to prove his readiness for the global event.
