CAF President Motsepe Expresses Optimism for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations
Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), conveyed a message of confidence regarding the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations finals scheduled for 2027. Despite acknowledging several challenges, he firmly believes that the tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, will achieve significant success.
Challenges Acknowledged but Overcome
While specific challenges were not disclosed, concerns have been raised about the ongoing construction of stadiums, particularly in Kenya. In a press briefing held in Johannesburg, Motsepe highlighted that local government officials confirmed in May that the construction of the Talanta Sports City, which boasts a 60,000-seat capacity, is progressing as planned. Additionally, renovations at the 48,000-capacity Moi International Sports Centre are also on track to be completed in time for the tournament.
On Confidence and Resilience
Motsepe emphasized the importance of maintaining faith in the capabilities of the people involved, stating, “We have to have confidence in our people despite the challenges, and sometimes there will be failures, but we have to get up and go again.” His words underline a spirit of resilience and determination that is vital for the successful execution of the tournament.
A Promising Future for African Football
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations is not only a standalone event but also marks the beginning of a new cycle, as the tournament will revert to being held every four years, starting with the 2028 edition. Motsepe announced that the bidding process for the subsequent tournaments in 2028, 2032, and 2036 has already commenced, with a number of “exciting bids” being submitted, although further details were not provided.
Upcoming Schedule and Qualifiers
Planned for a duration from June 19th to July 17th, 2027, the finals will feature a competitive 24-team format. Qualifying rounds for this expansive tournament will initiate in September and are set to conclude by March, paving the way for teams to battle for a spot in this prestigious football event.
