Haaland and Norwegian Coach Solbakken Apologize to Swiss for Dreadful Pitch Conditions
In a post-match statement, Erling Haaland, the iconic forward representing Manchester City, alongside Stale Solbakken, the head coach of the Norwegian national football team, issued an apology to the Swiss coaching staff and players. This came in the wake of an uneventful friendly match that ended in a goalless draw between Norway and Switzerland, held on a pitch that was far from acceptable.
The condition of the pitch at Ullevaal Stadion was a topic of discussion even before the match commenced. Swiss national team coach Murat Yakin had raised alarms, pointing out the poor quality of the playing surface, which he described as riddled with “holes everywhere.” This condition, attributed to the harsh Norwegian winter, posed significant challenges for both teams, particularly impacting the technical gameplay for Switzerland.
Following the match, Haaland was candid about the inadequacies of the pitch, stating to NRK.no, “The pitch simply wasn’t good enough.” He reminisced about his previous experiences on poorly maintained fields, recalling that the last time he encountered such conditions was in the Faroe Islands, which he noted was, in fact, in better shape than what they faced that night.
Haaland continued by acknowledging that while the game itself remained intact, the quality of play suffered markedly. “Switzerland, with respect to them, tried to implement their style, but you could see mistakes forming that wouldn’t happen on a proper pitch. It’s slightly favorable for us that the conditions weren’t great, allowing us to capitalize on those errors, but ultimately, it’s not acceptable. I apologized to everyone involved; this is simply not good enough,” he emphasized.
Solbakken shared similar sentiments, confirming that he had already expressed his regrets to Murat Yakin prior to the kickoff. Both figures acknowledged the need for improvements in pitch maintenance to support fair and challenging competition at international levels.
