HV 71 on the Brink of Survival in the SHL Play-Out
HV 71 is now just one victory away from securing its place in the Swedish Hockey League, following a decisive 3-1 victory against Leksand, putting them in a commanding position with a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Initially, HV 71 appeared to have the upper hand in the series after winning two closely contested matches by a single goal. However, facing Leksand in their home arena for the first time presented a true test of their mettle, especially considering Leksand’s recent struggles, having lost their last four games.
The match at Tegera Arena quickly escalated into an intense contest, with aggressive play evident from the outset. Just five minutes into the game, Axel Rindell incurred a game misconduct penalty for cross-checking, which was one of seven penalties issued during the scoreless opening period.
The second period started with a similar level of intensity, as Anton Johansson equalized for Leksand after being penalized for an illegal check to the head. However, just before the period concluded, HV 71 regained momentum when Jonathan Ang netted a crucial goal, giving them a 2-1 lead.
In the third period, HV 71 capitalized on their momentum, extending their lead to 3-1 with Joona Luota scoring his first goal with just over 15 minutes left on the clock. Although Leksand managed to score during a power play through Lukas Vejdemo, which was his second goal of the series, it was insufficient to make a comeback. Luota then sealed the game with an empty-netter in the final second.
Leksand now faces the formidable challenge of needing to win four consecutive games to avoid relegation to HockeyAllsvenskan, with their next opportunity to start this recovery coming in Game 4 on March 24th. A victory in that matchup, or any subsequent games in the series, would secure HV 71’s survival for the third consecutive season in the SHL.
