Joao Fonseca Withdraws from US Open Due to Abdominal Injury
Joao Fonseca, the promising 20-year-old tennis player from Brazil, has announced via Instagram that he will not be participating in the upcoming U.S. Open due to an abdominal injury. This decision adds him to the list of high-profile withdrawals in the men’s singles category, further shaking up the tournament’s anticipated lineup.
Ranking at 26th in the world, Fonseca had recently gained attention for his remarkable performance at the French Open, where he made it to the quarter-finals, scoring wins over prominent players like Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud. His withdrawal marks a significant loss for the tournament, as he was considered one of the rising stars to watch this year at Flushing Meadows.
In his statement, Fonseca expressed the difficulty of his decision, highlighting that it comes after undergoing medical tests and beginning treatment for his injury. He emphasized the need for more time to ensure a complete recovery, in order to return and compete at his best. “It was not an easy decision to make, as it is a very special tournament for me. We’ll keep working hard so I can come back as soon as possible,” he stated, underlining his determination.
Additonally, the tournament has seen other significant withdrawals, including world number one Jannik Sinner and British player Jack Draper, both of whom pulled out the previous week due to injuries. Former world number four Holger Rune is also set to miss the U.S. Open, further altering the competitive landscape of the event.
As fans and players alike prepare for the main draw of the men’s singles, which commences on Sunday, the absence of key players continues to raise questions about the tournament’s dynamics and the potential opportunities for emerging talents to capitalize on the situation.
