Guillermo Hoyos Confirmed as Inter Miami’s New Coach

Guillermo Hoyos has officially taken on the role of head coach for Inter Miami, succeeding Javier Mascherano, who resigned for personal reasons just four months after leading the team to its first MLS Cup title.

A Longstanding Friendship with Messi

Hoyos, who previously served as Inter Miami’s sporting director, has a longstanding friendship with Lionel Messi, dating back over two decades when he was a mentor in Barcelona’s youth setup. He emphasized that their friendship would not prevent him from demanding high performance during training sessions.

Commitment to Excellence

“Friendship is non-negotiable. We share a friendship that spans many years,” Hoyos stated at his introductory press conference. “However, that friendship does not mean that we will be constantly hovering over him or in his face every single day.”

Expectations and Future Plans

Initially, a club statement indicated that Hoyos would be in charge for the “upcoming matches,” but further communications have clarified that he is now recognized as the head coach. Sources within the club anticipate that Hoyos’ tenure will last until at least mid-year, with plans to implement a new coaching staff prior to the Leagues Cup in August.

Current Season Standing

As the season stands after seven matches, Inter Miami is positioned third in the Eastern Conference of MLS. The team features Lionel Messi, the 2022 World Cup champion and an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, as its star player.
