Max Verstappen Disqualified from NLS2 Victory at Nürburgring Due to Tire Violation
In a surprising twist at the Nürburgring, Max Verstappen’s Winward Mercedes-AMG team encountered a significant setback as they were disqualified from their victorious position in the NLS2 race. Following a dominant performance in the four-hour endurance event, it was revealed that the team had exceeded the permitted tire allocation, utilizing 28 tires instead of the allowed 24.
Verstappen, alongside teammates Jules Gounon and Daniel Juncadella, initially claimed victory with an impressive margin, finishing 59 seconds ahead of their nearest rivals. Their commanding lead highlighted the team’s effectiveness on the iconic 24.358-kilometer configuration of the Nürburgring, where Verstappen secured the pole position by nearly two seconds.
However, the disqualification came as a direct consequence of the strict regulations enforced by the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie, which left no room for leniency. As a result of this ruling, racing duo Dan Harper and Jordan Pepper were subsequently awarded the victory for NLS2.
This incident marks a contrasting emotional swing for Verstappen, who recently faced challenges in Formula 1. Just a week prior, he finished sixth during the F1 season opener in Australia and failed to finish the race in Shanghai. The disqualification at Nürburgring, however, serves as a reminder of the stringent rules governing motorsport and the continuous scrutiny teams endure to uphold fairness in competition.
With eyes now set on the upcoming Japan Grand Prix, Verstappen aims to regroup and capitalize on the lessons learned from this weekend’s events, hoping to convert the disappointment into renewed focus and determination as the season progresses.
