MAZRAOUI SAYS MOROCCO WILL STAY HUMBLE AFTER SEALING WORLD CUP ROUND OF 16 BERTH
Morocco national team defender Noussair Mazraoui has asserted that his team will maintain a humble posture as they advance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, having secured their place in the Round of 16 following a thrilling encounter against the Netherlands.
In a dramatic penalty shootout at Monterrey Stadium, Morocco emerged victorious with a 3-2 triumph, becoming the first African team ever to reach this stage after the match concluded 1-1 in regulation and extra time. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou played a pivotal role, showcasing his skills on the world stage.
Despite Cody Gakpo’s opening goal for the Netherlands in the 72nd minute, Morocco’s determination led them to equalize with a header from Issa Diop during stoppage time, forcing the match into extra time.
After an intense additional period without further scoring, Soufiane Rahimi, Chemsdine Talbi, and Ismail Saibari successfully converted their penalties, sealing Morocco’s progression. This victory was particularly significant following South Africa’s earlier defeat to Canada, which ended their run in the tournament.
Post-match, Mazraoui discussed the strategies that led to their success against a formidable Dutch side. “Every World Cup is different,” he emphasized in an interview with FIFA.com, reflecting on the progress of both the national team and its federation. “What we achieved was four years ago; each World Cup offers a new chance to demonstrate our capabilities.”
The defender further elaborated on the match, stating, “We maintained our composure throughout, including in the closing moments. We didn’t panic when the Netherlands opted to defend.” He credited Talbi’s brilliant assist that ultimately set up Diop’s equalizing header as a crucial moment in their comeback.
Characterizing the Dutch squad as one of the elite teams globally, ranked among the top 10, Mazraoui highlighted the significance of their ability to overcome such competition, underscoring the dedication and effort put forth by the national team during their journey.
Discussing tactical adjustments, he noted their improved ball possession in the second half and acknowledged the Netherlands’ counter-attack strategy, which initially led to their goal. “Their tactical approach had merits despite our inability to score in the first half,” he commented.
As they prepare for their next challenge against Canada in the Round of 16, scheduled for Saturday, July 4th, Mazraoui expressed respect for their upcoming opponents. “Canada is in excellent form, boasting a quality team,” he remarked, aware of the difficulty that lies ahead as they aim to make history again for Moroccan football.
Historically, Morocco has participated in seven World Cups, with their most distinguished achievement occurring during the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where they became the first African and Arab nation to reach the semi-finals, finishing fourth overall. Their upcoming clash with Canada not only represents a chance for advancement but is also steeped in high expectations from their supporters and the wider football community.
