Pittsburgh Pirates Call Up Top Prospect Konnor Griffin for Home Opener

The Pittsburgh Pirates have made a significant move by officially promoting Konnor Griffin, baseball’s highly coveted No. 1 prospect, just in time for their home opener on Friday. Griffin, a talented 19-year-old shortstop, is set to make his major league debut against the Baltimore Orioles. Hailing from Jackson, Mississippi, Griffin was selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.

In his recent performance during five Triple-A games this season, Griffin showcased his skills with a stellar batting average of .438, having gone 7-for-16 at the plate. His contribution includes three doubles, one run batted in (RBI), and three stolen bases. However, it was his remarkable 2025 season that truly cemented his status atop the prospect rankings. Over the span of 122 games across Single-A, High-A, and Double-A leagues, Griffin achieved an impressive combined batting average of .333, along with a formidable .941 on-base plus slugging (OPS). He recorded 21 home runs, 94 RBIs, and an astonishing 65 stolen bases from 78 attempts, earning him the 2025 Minor League Gold Glove Award.

During Spring Training this year, however, Griffin encountered some struggles, managing only a .171 batting average with four home runs, nine RBIs, two walks, 13 strikeouts, and a single stolen base in 41 at-bats. Now, as he joins a Pirates lineup currently sitting right in the middle of the league with a .231 batting average, all eyes will be on Griffin to see if he can make an immediate impact. The Pirates currently hold a record of 3-3 as the season progresses.

Should Griffin successfully remain with the team throughout the entire season, Pittsburgh stands to benefit from a draft pick through the Prospect Promotion Incentive, further highlighting the importance of this exciting young player’s addition to the roster.
