Scotland Shocks Argentina with Dominant Seven-Try Performance in Córdoba

In an electrifying start to the Nations Championship, Scotland turned the tables on Argentina with a stunning 47-38 victory, showcasing their attacking prowess with an impressive seven-try display. The match, held on Saturday, saw Scotland capitalizing on their opponents’ lackluster performance, having suffered a defeat to Argentina just nine months prior.

Despite the absence of their star flyhalf Finn Russell due to injury, Scotland’s team executed their game plan flawlessly, racing to a 19-10 lead by halftime with tries from Captain Sione Tuipulotu, prop Pierre Schoeman, and center Rory Hutchinson. The Scots maintained their momentum in the second half, adding four more tries to secure their victory, courtesy of contributions from Gregor Brown, Scott Cummings, debutant Gregor Hiddlestone, and Kyle Rowe.

Fergus Burke and Tom Jordan played a pivotal role in the game, successfully converting three attempts each. Argentina managed to make their mark on the score sheet as well, scoring five tries through Joaquin Oviedo, Rodrigo Isgro, Thomas Rapetti, Lucio Cinti, and Agustin Moyano, with Tomas Albornoz converting all attempts and adding a penalty to their tally.

The scoring opened with Oviedo’s try in the seventh minute when he powered through from a lineout maul. However, Scotland responded quickly with Tuipulotu crossing the line after an impressive 14-phase build-up. Schoeman’s try, originating from Rowe’s break, followed shortly after, and Hutchinson later solidified the Scots’ command with a try that emerged from a well-executed scrum.

Argentina found themselves on the back foot but began clawing back when winger Isgro scored early in the second half thanks to a grubber kick from Santiago Carreras. Nonetheless, Scotland maintained their composure, with Brown scoring from a maul shortly thereafter, re-establishing a comfortable cushion.

Scotland continued to push their advantage with Cummings adding another try before Argentina threatened to initiate a comeback through Rapetti’s score. However, Hiddlestone and Rowe swiftly extinguished any hopes of an Argentine resurgence with quick successive tries, keeping Scotland in a commanding position.

As the match progressed into the final minutes, Argentina sprang to life, scoring two quick tries, with Cinti and Moyano contributing to the scoreboard, but it was clear from Captain Julian Montoya’s remarks that the team’s performance fell short of expectations. “We weren’t good enough; the intensity and urgency weren’t there,” he remarked, pointing out the team’s struggles in crucial areas of the game.
