SHL Playoffs: Skelleftea Triumphs in Record-Breaking Match

The semi-finals of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) playoffs kicked off with a historic showdown as Skelleftea faced off against Lulea, resulting in an extraordinary match that lasted an unprecedented 123 minutes and 18 seconds. This encounter not only concluded with Skelleftea emerging victorious with a 4-3 scoreline but also set a new benchmark for the longest match in the league’s history.

Record-Breaking Overtime

This thrilling match was notable for being the first in the SHL to necessitate four full periods of overtime, exceeding the traditional regulation time significantly. The previous record stood at 119 minutes and 16 seconds, set back in March 1997 during a face-off between Leksand and Farjestad.

Game Highlights

Initially, Skelleftea, having needed just one fewer quarter-final match to advance past Malmo compared to Lulea’s matchup against Frolunda, capitalized on their freshness to take an early lead in the third minute. Max Krogdahl’s precise pass from the blue line was perfectly executed by Lars Bryggman, who found the back of the net.

Lulea made a spirited comeback, equalizing just six minutes later. Isac Hedqvist won pivotal possession deep in Skelleftea’s territory, setting up Brian O’Neill for a pass that enabled Brendan Shinnimin to score and bring the match to 1-1.

As the second period unfolded, Skelleftea reclaimed the lead with a goal from Pontus Johansson, thanks to a successful face-off by Par Lindholm. This lead was briefly doubled in the third period through a power-play goal by Oscar Lindberg following a slashing penalty against Oskari Laaksonen.

Lulea’s Resurgence

Despite Skelleftea’s momentum, Lulea fought back ferociously. Oskar Engsund’s deflected shot from the blue line caught the home team’s defense off guard, bringing the score to 3-2. A subsequently awarded power play for Lulea, after a holding call against Valter Lindberg, facilitated an agile team play that culminated in Mathias Brome assisting Frederic Allard to score, leveling the match at 3-3 with just nine minutes remaining.

Overtime Drama

While both teams had chances in overtime, including Bryggman hitting the post and a brilliant save by Matteus Ward against Viktor Grahn, neither side could secure the decisive goal during the first two overtime periods, necessitating a fifth period.

The match reached its climax just two minutes and 18 seconds into the seventh period, as Andreas Johnsson netted the winning goal for Skelleftea, bringing the match to a close at 4-3. This striking goal came after a chaotic moment where Krogdahl’s shot veered wide but was recovered by Emil Djuse, who then set up Johnsson perfectly.

Looking Forward

In total, Skelleftea fired 53 shots on goal compared to Lulea’s 38 attempts, illustrating their aggressive pursuit of victory. For the defending champions Lulea, this outcome was particularly disheartening, as they must regroup for the next game in the series, scheduled for Thursday, April 9th.

The SHL has made headlines within the hockey community, mirroring Finland’s Liiga in setting length records during this postseason, as seen with Assat’s 125-minute match against SaiPa earlier in the playoffs.
