Todd Boehly and Mark Walter Consider Selling Chelsea Stakes

Recent reports indicate that Todd Boehly, the chairman of Chelsea, and director Mark Walter are contemplating the sale of their stakes in the renowned Premier League club to Clearlake Capital, the team’s majority owner. This move could signify a pivotal change in the ownership dynamics of Chelsea, which has been subject to considerable scrutiny since the club was acquired.

In May 2022, Boehly and Walter, both American billionaires, were instrumental in acquiring Chelsea from Roman Abramovich for a considerable sum of £2.5 billion (approximately $3.3 billion). Currently, Clearlake Capital holds a dominant 62% share of Chelsea, while Boehly and Walter, alongside investor Hansjorg Wyss, possess the remainder. Together, these three investors maintain a 38% stake through their company, Blueco Holdings.

However, dissatisfaction has been brewing within the ranks of the initial investors. Sources close to the matter suggest that Boehly has expressed concerns regarding the strategic direction of Chelsea, particularly in relation to recruitment practices, managerial selections, and the plans for a new stadium. This has led to speculation that Boehly and Clearlake have sought to buy each other out on multiple occasions over the preceding two years, largely due to conflicting visions for the club’s future.

Valuation discussions indicate that Boehly and Walter believe Chelsea could be worth around £5 billion if they decide to divest their holdings. The camaraderie and business partnership between Boehly and Walter extend beyond football, as they have previously invested in Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers and the women’s basketball team, the LA Sparks.

On the field, Chelsea’s performance has left much to be desired; the club finished a disappointing 10th in the Premier League during the last season. In response to this underwhelming performance, the club has appointed Xabi Alonso as their new manager. The upcoming 2026/27 season will see Chelsea start with an opening match against Fulham on August 24th, marking a hopeful turn as they aim to restore their standing in English football.
