Tour de France Leaders Woken in the Night for Doping Tests

In a surprising turn of events during the Tour de France, top contenders Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia and Jonas Vingegaard from Denmark reported that they were subjected to anti-doping controls in the early hours before the commencement of the 15th stage. This has raised questions about the implications of unannounced testing protocols established since 2016, whereby riders can be tested at any time between 11 PM and 6 AM local time.

Pogacar’s Disrupted Sleep

Pogacar, who currently wears the yellow jersey, disclosed that he was awakened at 5 AM for a test, as confirmed by a spokesperson from his team, UAE Team Emirates-XRG. Reflecting on the incident, he stated, “I got four hours of sleep today. I couldn’t fall back to sleep. It was definitely not nice to wake up in the middle of sweet dreams.” This revelation underscores the potential impact of such late-night tests on athlete performance and recovery.

Vingegaard’s Surprise Call

Meanwhile, Vingegaard shared his experience, revealing that he was tested at 2 AM, which caught him off guard. “The ITA (International Testing Agency) didn’t allow me to sleep much. I was sleeping very well, but somebody knocked on my door at 2 a.m., big surprise to me,” remarked the two-time Tour champion. He acknowledged the importance of testing but voiced concerns about the timing, stating, “Of course, it’s good that they test, but when it’s affecting performance and your sleep, I don’t think it’s so good.” Vingegaard further noted that the process took about 40 minutes, making for an undeniably restless night.

Implications of Testing Practices

This incident highlights the ongoing tension between anti-doping efforts and the well-being of athletes. Both Pogacar and Vingegaard’s statements reflect a growing concern within the cycling community regarding the timing and frequency of doping tests, particularly at critical competitive junctures where rest is paramount.

Continued Rivalry and Focus on Performance

As the Tour de France progresses, the rivalry between Pogacar and Vingegaard intensifies, with both athletes pushing their limits. It remains to be seen how these early morning disruptions may influence their subsequent performances as they navigate the challenging stages ahead in this prestigious race.
