TPS Stuns VPS in Vaasa, Closer to Veikkausliiga’s Top Half
In a thrilling encounter in Vaasa, TPS showcased their dominance by securing a vital 3-1 away victory over VPS. This win places TPS just a breath away from breaking into the top half of the Veikkausliiga standings, with only goal difference keeping them from this coveted position.
The match marked the beginning of the 20th round of the season, out of a total of 22, as teams prepare for the forthcoming split that will see the stronger squads vying for championship honors and European qualification. Currently, TPS sits in seventh place, now level on points with Gnistan and just one point shy of VPS and AC Oulu.
During the first half, TPS demonstrated their strength on the pitch, dominating possession yet initially not converting it into goals. It seemed they would head into halftime without a score, but a brilliant solo effort from Timo Zaal in the 45th minute changed that scenario. Zaal skillfully maneuvered through the defense and unleashed a stunning shot from over 20 yards, slotting it into the bottom corner to give TPS the lead.
The momentum continued for TPS shortly after, when a reckless challenge from Oluwaseyi Ogunniyi inside the box on Elmer Vauhkonen resulted in a penalty. Albijon Muzaci stepped up and coolly converted the spot-kick straight down the middle, doubling the visitors’ advantage.
In an attempt to turn the tide, VPS made a bold substitution at halftime, introducing Xavier Odhiambo. This tactical adjustment re-energized the hosts, who started the second half brightly. Their persistence paid off in the 75th minute when Henri Salomaa made a penetrating run down the right flank, delivering a precise cutback for Odhiambo, who made no mistake in finding the bottom corner, bringing VPS back into contention.
However, the hope was short-lived as TPS quickly extinguished any comeback aspirations. With just ten minutes remaining in regulation, Miika Kauppila delivered an exquisite cross from the left side, perfectly finding Nils Veinbergs, who expertly headed the ball home, securing all three points for TPS.
With this victory, TPS has now gone three games without defeat, showcasing a commendable turnaround in form. Conversely, VPS is grappling with their form, suffering four defeats in their last five matches, a situation exacerbated by Emmanuel Okereke receiving a second yellow card late in the game.
