Mathias Gidsel to Swim Across Lillebaelt in Open Water Challenge
On Thursday afternoon, the renowned Danish handball player and World Handballer of the Year, Mathias Gidsel, is preparing for an unusual challenge with his teammates from Füchse Berlin. The team is currently engaged in a training camp in Denmark, during which their coach, Nicolej Krichau, has devised an adventurous task: a swim across the Lillebaelt strait, a narrow yet deep waterway that lies between the Jutland Peninsula and Funen Island.
The challenge involves swimming a distance of 800 meters from Snoghoj to Middelfart, set in open waters. This test not only aims to boost the players’ physical stamina but also strengthens team cohesion as they prepare for upcoming competitive events.
Just before this swimming challenge, Füchse Berlin faced Aalborg Handball in a friendly match. The game was an exhilarating display of skill, concluding in a high-paced draw with a score of 36-36. This result showcases the competitive spirit of both teams, with Aalborg having previously reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, which indicates a raised level of play as the season starts.
Looking ahead, Füchse Berlin is gearing up for its 2026/27 season, set to kick off on August 22 against SC Magdeburg in the German Super Cup, hosted in Munich. Following this event, they will commence their Bundesliga campaign on August 27, where they will compete against MT Melsungen in a match at the Max-Schmeling-Halle, a key venue for the team.
