Richard Carapaz Withdraws from Giro d’Italia, Focusing on Tour de France
Richard Carapaz, the former Olympic champion, will not participate in this year’s Giro d’Italia as he continues to recuperate from perineal surgery, according to an announcement from his EF Education–EasyPost team on Wednesday. The 32-year-old athlete from Ecuador, who famously secured gold in the road race at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, has decided to channel his efforts towards preparing for the upcoming Tour de France, which kicks off on July 4 in Barcelona and culminates on July 26 in Paris.
Expressing his disappointment, Carapaz remarked, “For me, it’s a complete disappointment, because the Giro is a race that I’ve always had a lot of affection for and looked forward to.” He conveyed the emotional weight of this decision, stating, “Finding myself in this situation is frustrating because you put a lot of desire and time into it, but in the end I have to prioritise my health now and move forward.” He remains optimistic, asserting, “I will make the best of it and move forward. We are at the gates of the Tour.”
