Gabriel Martinelli Set to Avoid FA Punishment After Incident with Referee

In a recent development regarding Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, it has been confirmed that the forward is unlikely to face any disciplinary action from the Football Association (FA) after a controversial incident during the FA Cup quarter-final match against Southampton. The match, held on Saturday, ended in a defeat for Arsenal, during which Martinelli was shown a yellow card by referee Samuel Barrott for shoving him while attempting to take a quick free-kick.

Despite the physical interaction, reports indicate that Martinelli will not receive any further sanctions beyond the yellow card issued at the time of the incident. According to The Athletic, since the referee addressed the altercation on the field, the FA has chosen not to investigate the matter further or impose additional penalties on Martinelli.

Former referee Mark Halsey weighed in on the situation, expressing disapproval of Martinelli’s actions. “I’m sorry, but Gabriel Martinelli showed total disrespect for the match official Sam Barrott in that situation,” Halsey commented. He added that while Barrott issued a yellow card, he personally believes it warranted a red card. Halsey emphasized that players should not engage physically with referees, stating, “You just cannot put your hands on a referee, let alone push him out of the way.”

Halsey’s criticism also extended to the broader implications of such behavior, highlighting the potential negative message it sends to lower league referees and those officiating local games. He noted the importance of maintaining respect for match officials at all levels, particularly in grassroots football, where volunteer referees could be discouraged by witnessing such behavior in professional matches.
