Armand Duplantis Wins Fourth European Pole Vault Title with a New Championship Record
In a spectacular display of athleticism and resilience, Armand “Mondo” Duplantis secured his fourth consecutive title at the European Championships in men’s pole vaulting on Sunday. The Swedish athlete defeated his competitors by clearing an impressive height of 6.15 meters, surpassing his own championship record of 6.10 meters, which he had set two years ago in Rome. This achievement not only emphasizes his dominance in the sport but also showcases his consistency at high-stakes competitions.
Despite claiming victory, Duplantis’s performance was marked by an unexpected concern stemming from his dining choice the night prior to the final. The 26-year-old revealed that he had lunch at an Indian restaurant, an experience he later described with a sense of humor as “the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.” He expressed regret over this decision, acknowledging that it may have played a role in his pre-competition routine. “If you want an upset stomach… I can’t fathom why I ate Indian food before a competition,” he confided to the Swedish media outlet Aftonbladet, adding that he had been occupied with subsequent bathroom visits throughout the day.
During the final, once Duplantis cleared the 6.15-meter mark, his closest rival, Karalis, attempted a jump at 6.20 meters but failed. This secured Duplantis’s victory without necessitating a pursuit of his own world record of 6.31 meters, a move that he deemed unnecessary given previous concerns about his health leading up to the event. “I had a minor issue a couple of weeks ago, so I wanted to be a bit cautious. It wasn’t that warm, either. That was enough for me today,” he elaborated, demonstrating a keen awareness of the need to balance health and performance.
Regardless of the less-than-ideal preparation, Duplantis has continued to cement his legacy in athletics, amassing a remarkable collection of accolades: four European Championship titles, three World Championship titles, and two Olympic gold medals. This recent victory represents his 13th consecutive gold medal at a major championship, reinforcing his status as one of the top pole vaulters in history.
