Premier League to Publish Independent Body’s Review of Referee and VAR Decisions
The Premier League has announced its decision to publicly share the findings of its independent Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel, which is responsible for reviewing the decisions made by referees and the VAR during matches. This initiative aims to enhance transparency within the English top-flight and will be implemented on a weekly basis. The announcement was made on Tuesday, indicating a commitment to greater accountability in officiating.
Established during the 2022-23 season, the five-member KMI Panel meticulously reviews major incidents that occur throughout match play, assessing and voting on the officiating decisions. While the results of these evaluations were previously shared with clubs and officials, detailed judgments had remained confidential until last season. The Premier League’s latest move signals a shift toward more openness regarding how officials evaluate their decisions.
To further this level of transparency, the league announced that it would begin sharing direct quotes from on-field officials and VAR perspectives during significant incidents via the Premier League Match Centre social media accounts. Additionally, for select matches, the in-game audio captured from referees’ microphones will also be made available.
The Premier League expressed its intent to continue working alongside the professional referees’ body to advocate for the broadcasting of more communications from match officials during games. This move is aimed at improving the overall understanding of officiating decisions among fans and stakeholders alike.
The forthcoming 2026-27 Premier League season is set to kick off on Friday, featuring a match between the defending champions Arsenal and newly promoted Coventry City. The anticipation surrounding this season is heightened by the introduction of these new transparency measures, which are expected to reshape how fans engage with the officiating elements of the game.
